your journal never leaves your phone.

Last updated June 13, 2026

Gumption is built local-first on purpose. This page explains, in plain language, exactly what stays on your device, the one thing that ever leaves it, and why we collect nothing about you.

the short version

  • There is no account, no login, and no email to sign up. We don't collect personal data in the background.
  • Your reflections, banked days, and settings live on your device only.
  • For Pro's next-morning note, today's reflection is sent anonymously (no name, no email, no user or device ID), used once, and never stored on our servers.
  • The one thing we do keep is feedback you choose to send us (the "Help shape Gumption" button, or a shake) — so we can act on it. It's not linked to any identity and is never used for tracking or ads.
  • No analytics. No advertising. No third-party tracking. No IDFA.

who we are

Gumption ("the app," "we," "us") is an iOS app published by PLAYRIOT. You can reach us any time at [email protected].

what stays on your device

Everything that makes Gumption personal is stored locally on your iPhone and is never uploaded to us:

  • Your written and spoken reflections.
  • Your banked days and longest run.
  • Gus's next-morning notes and any weekly insight.
  • Your settings (notification time, preferences), stored in the system's standard on-device settings store.

If you delete the app, this data is removed with it. Because it lives only on your device, we cannot see it, read it, or recover it.

your reflections & the coach

Gumption's paid feature — the coach that remembers you — writes a next-morning follow-up and a weekly insight that thread your history. To do that with real quality, the text of your recent reflections is sent to our coaching service over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection.

When that happens, we are deliberate about what we don't send:

  • No name. Gumption never asks for one.
  • No email address. There is no account to attach it to.
  • No user ID or device ID. The request carries no identifier that could tie it back to you.
  • No login or authentication token.

The request is used once, in the moment, to generate your note — and then it is gone. Our coaching service stores nothing: no database write, no logging of your content, no profile. The free version of Gumption generates its next-morning note entirely on your device, so for free users nothing from the journal leaves your phone at all (the only exception, on any tier, is feedback you actively choose to send — see below).

This is the exact line we show inside the app: "Your journal lives on your device — no account, no cloud history. To write tomorrow's note, today's reflection is sent anonymously, used once, and never stored."

feedback you choose to send

If you tap "Help shape Gumption" in Settings (or shake your phone), a feedback sheet opens. Only when you write something and tap Send does a submission go to our feedback service so a human can read it and act on it. Nothing is sent unless you actively submit it.

A submission includes the text you wrote, plus basic context to help us reproduce issues: your app version, device model (e.g. "iPhone16,2"), and OS version. It does not include your name, your reflections, or any account or advertising identifier — and no email unless you type one into the optional "notify me when this ships" field. It is never used for tracking or advertising; we store it only to triage and respond to your feedback. This is the one data type listed in our App Privacy label ("Other User Content," not linked to you, not used for tracking).

how the notes are generated

To produce Gus's personalized follow-ups, our coaching service passes the anonymous reflection text to a third-party AI provider (Anthropic) purely for text generation, then returns the result to your phone. The text is used only to generate your note; it is not used to identify you, and — to the extent governed by the provider's enterprise terms — is not used to train their models. We do not retain a copy.

we don't track you

Gumption contains no analytics SDKs, no advertising SDKs, and no third-party trackers. We do not use the Advertising Identifier (IDFA), and we do not track you across apps or websites. Our App Privacy disclosure and on-device privacy manifest reflect this: tracking is off, and the only data type we collect is the feedback you choose to send us (above).

subscriptions & payments

Gumption Pro is sold as an auto-renewing subscription through Apple's App Store. All payment is handled by Apple — we never see or receive your card details, billing address, or Apple ID. Your purchase is managed in your Apple ID account settings. Apple's handling of that transaction is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.

notifications

If you allow notifications, Gumption schedules your morning reminder locally on your device. The reminder text (including a preview of Gus's note) is composed on your phone — it is not sent through a remote push server we operate.

children

Gumption is intended for adults and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children — and, as described above, we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone.

your choices & data deletion

Because your data lives on your device and we store nothing about you on our servers, you are always in control:

  • Delete everything by deleting the app — all reflections, banked days, and notes go with it.
  • Turn off the network feature by using the free tier or going offline; the on-device note still works.
  • There is no server-side account or profile to request deletion of, because we never created one.

changes to this policy

If we change how Gumption handles data, we'll update this page and the "last updated" date above. Material changes will be reflected in the app before they take effect.
